A tenpin bowling centre in Nottinghamshire had some bowling lanes spare on a normally busy night. They had only just begun creating a mobile SMS database and had just 67 numbers on file of regular customers.
For a test run, they sent a text to each customer offering a heavily discounted bowling package with a minimum of 6 people required per bowling lane to accept the offer. Out of the 67 customers who were sent a text, two responded and booked a lane each.
This might not seem like a great response until you look at the returns against what was actually spent.
The cost was 67 texts sent at 7.5p each = £5.02
The returns:
Two customers booked each with a minimum of 6 in their bowling party. They each paid £10.95 to bowl from 7pm until 11pm. As an average they each had one drink per hour at a cost of £2.50 per drink.
12 bowlers x £10.95 = £131.40
12 x £2.50 per drink x 4 (1 drink per hour) = £120.00
The total incoming cash on the evening was £251.40 against the cost of texts, costing just £5.02!
The bowling centre now has 1000's of mobile numbers on their databases and uses the texting service on a regular basis.
On a slightly larger scale
A health club in the midlands decided to restructure its pricing policy and lower it's membership fees to increase the amount of members the club had. They decided to text the new prices to 1150 members who had left the club in the previous two years. From the texts that were sent out 43 responded.
The cost of sending 1150 texts at 6.4p = £73.60
The 43 members who returned to the club had to sign a 12 month contact and each paid £30 per month = £15,480.00 received in the first year (plus many remained members after the initial 12 months).
After the first 12 months, this was a staggering profit of £15,406.40 from an initial investment of just £73.60!
The figures show that Text Marketing can be very profitable indeed!
